Music mogul and animal activist Russell Simmons has given his endorsement to Bold Native – a narrative film about the underground Animal Liberation Front.

Earlier this summer, Ecorazzi reported that Simmons was planning to attend the premiere in New York City, and although we couldn’t make it, we heard it was a huge success!

The Launch of Gracious Gourmand on Friday August 28th was a huge success! Tucked in the cozy, candle-lit Second Stop Cafe, 30 foodies gathered to dine on the meticulous, visually stunning and delicious creations of Chef Lagusta Yearwood, featuring produce from Taliaferro Farms and Second Wind CSA . Our sponsor was Kanon Organic Vodka, and we created some delicious, freshly-juiced watermelon-mint and apple-beet libations.

“No Mercy” — An Art Installation

We have recently been turned on to artist and activist Mara Lefebvre, whose current project — “No Mercy” – is an art installation exploring how we treat the animals we eat. According to Mara, “‘No Mercy’ is a mixed media installation of which 35 sculptures have been completed. Wires, motors, electrical plugs, stove parts and other recycled objects are combined with plastic toy farm animals. The animals are confined, attached to wires and plugs or caught in unnatural positions. These postures represent the conditions at production facilities.”

Art Of The Animal: An Inside Look At Bold Native

The new indie film, Bold Native, has grabbed me and won’t let go. The film — a full-length fiction feature — follows an animal liberator, Charlie, who is spearheading a nationwide action and is wanted both by the FBI as well as his dear old dad. After I saw the film in Portland (and was moved to copious tears), I reviewed it for our podcast. I was also lucky enough to interview the filmmakers — Denis Henry Hennelly and Casey Suchan — as well as the lead actor — Joaquin Pastor — for our Art of the Animal series. Art of the Animal, in case you aren’t familiar, is where we showcase artists of all kinds who are speaking up for animals through their art.

Vegan Picnicking With Lazy Acres

It’s no secret that we like to head up to Santa Barbara every now and then just to grab some vegan pizza. We’ve taken a few trips up north for that reason—we have pizza for dinner, spend the night in a hotel, and before returning home, grab a couple sandwiches from lazy acres and head out for a winery picnic.
