Unless you’ve been living under a piece of tofu, you’ve already heard of Eating Animals by (my new hero) Jonathan Safran Foer. It’s possible that this book has the power to propel today’s animal rights movement with the same vigor that Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation transformed that of the 1970’s (and 80’s and 90’s and – what do we call this decade, anyway?).
Foer’s much-anticipated book, a literary piece of veg-enius that blends sweet memoir with cold hard facts is finally released and ready for us to consume. Yesterday, the scruffy, soft-spoken Brooklynite graced the stage of another vegan hero, Ellen DeGeneres. Following a compelling and meaty (or meat-free, I guess) interview where Foer mentioned such inconvenient truths as the fact that factory farming is one of the leading causes of global warming, he tackled some questions from the audience.Aside from the passing implication that there are acceptable ways to raise turkeys for slaughter (and okay, I’ll forgive you for that, Jonathan, as I’ll chalk it up to strategy), this is an interview that’s not to be missed.
