Aussie Kids More Animal-Friendly Than American Punks

While babysitting tonight I was flipping through the kids’ guide to Australia and came across a picture of two young boys on the beach with two pelicans hanging out only a few feet away. The caption said that Australian animals are used to and not afraid of humans, the different species live together and respect each other. Dolphins will swim into shallow water and let people pet them.

My first thought? This would never happen in the U.S.! Kids would throw rocks at them, while their parents sat idly by, excusing that “boys will be boys.” I might be a tad synical, but last weekend my mom and I watched as two girls attempted to clap their hands onto butterflies so I’m not being unrealistic. Plus I just came home to read this story from Alaska: “Moose Tormented to Death by Students.”

Why can’t Americans take a note from Aussies and live in harmony with wild animals? Why do our children torture animals instinctually when theirs show awe and respect?

Questions to think on.

Also read the moose story. It’s so sad to see this kind of behaviour from our kids. :(
